What is this scan for?
Your kidneys are responsible for removing toxins from your body. They also balance electrolytes in the body and provide hormones necessary to regulate blood pressure and red blood cell production.
The most common reason for a renal ultrasound scan is loin pain, abdominal or back pain. This scan can be used to diagnose a variety of medical problems including:
- Kidney Stones
- Problems with the prostate gland
- Effects of infection
- Effects of trauma on the kidneys and bladder.
What does this scan show?
The scan checks the size, shape and condition of the bladder when full and immediately after emptying both kidneys and ureters to identify if there are visible signs of abnormalities.
The Ultrasound Scan Procedure
Ultrasound is safe, non-invasive and does not use ionizing radiation. During the ultrasound scan the sonographer will place a warm water-based gel on the area to be examined, and will then press firmly on the skin with an ultrasound probe, moving it around until they have obtained the desired images. The ultrasound scan has no known risks and is usually pain free. When the scan is completed the gel can be wiped off easily using tissue.
